The Fonteverde is the wonderful result of careful and professional restoration and re-adaptation work of a Medici retreat that was built in 1607 by Grand Duke Ferdinand I in the Medieval village of San Casciano dei Bagni, which is immersed in the Siennese countryside in the Val d’Orcia. This thermae town has been known and made use of since ancient times by the Etruscans and Romans and the resort represents the town’s vocation thanks to its spa , which can be reached easily from the hotel via the internal corridor.
Although the exterior of the hotel is very impressive because of its shapes and design, the interior is a celebration of local sandstone, travertine, terracotta and linen, which is used for the delicate furnishings. The restaurant ‘Ferdinando I’ is also very beautiful and it is located under the 17th Century portico and it boasts a splendid view of the valley. What is more, there are 3 meeting rooms available for use at the Fonteverde Tuscan Resort & Spa which can host managerial meetings or small conventions, whilst more exclusive events can be hosted in the Casina delle Rose , a beautiful little Liberty style property which is located within the resort’s grounds, which, like the hotel, has been wonderfully restored.
The Fonteverde spa is proud to boast 7 thermal pools: there are two indoor pools which can be reached from the hotel via the internal corridor, one of which is reserved for the Bioacquam circuit; another pool which is half indoors and half outdoors and offers 22 different types of massages which can be enjoyed whilst looking out over the valley; one for external guests; another for children; a pool for small animals; and a seventh pool that is 140m² in size and which offers guests a chance to cool down in the summer thanks to its cold water. The water at the spa is part of the calcium fluoride magnesium sulphate category and it flows out of the source at 42°C and is used for various thermal treatments in the different sections of the spa, but no matter how this precious water is used, it is a guarantee of relaxation and well-being, even if you suffer from certain diseases or disorders.
The spa’s Bioacquam circuit is truly exclusive and it involves using the indoor pool which is rich in hydromassage points, and the range of treatments available that make use of the thermal water is also notable and they include a Kneipp Circuit, the Multijet treatment in the pool with 180 thermal water jets, phytobalneo-therapy and a bath in thermal water that is enriched with extracts of medicinal plants which are personalised for the guest being treated.
A vast range of oriental holistic treatments are also performed at Fonteverde and they have been adapted to incorporate the spa’s thermal water, whilst in the aesthetic medicine sector of the spa guests can undergo traditional face and body treatments as well as correctional treatments for facial imperfections and/or rejuvenation using fillers, botox, biostimulations, chemical peels, radiofrequency treatments and lasers.
The fitness area is also very well equipped and guests can follow various fitness programmes here, including activities carried out in the pools.
The rooms here are decorated in a style that combines the hotel’s Renaissance traditions with modern needs. There are 78 rooms in total, including 7 suites and 6 junior suites , and the room types range from: Queen rooms , which are single or double with one bed; Privilege , some of which have a terrace and the possibility to host small domestic animals; Privilege Valle rooms , which have a view of the Val d’Orcia and Mount Amiata; and Deluxe rooms, which have a sofa bed which can be used for triple bookings. The range of suites consists of Junior Suites, which have a double bed and living area, the Val d’Orcia Suite, which has a separate living room and bedroom and a splendid view of the Val d’Orica, as does the Eleonora da Toledo Suite, and this latter suite also boasts a large living area and two travertine marble bathrooms. Last but certainly not least is the Cristina di Lorena Suite, the main feature of which is its large terrace.
Even the food served at the Fonteverde is centred around well-being: menus are created using healthy and low calorie ingredients, and special dietetic menus and children’s menus can also be requested. Located under a 17th Century portico with a splendid view of the valley, the resort’s restaurant Ferdinando I serves up a gourmet menu that makes use of local products and dishes from the traditional Tuscan cuisine, and all of this can be enjoyed on the terrace in the summer months, as can snacks from the Bioaquam Café which has its own poolside solarium. The wine card here is also of the highest quality and it boasts the best of Tuscan and Italian wines and they can be enjoyed at the La Corte Restaurant, a wonderful dining room that faces the open courtyard and which serves up a rich buffet at lunch.
Lastly, the ‘Il Falconiere’ bar is perfect for evening entertainment as it holds musical evenings and these can be enjoyed both in the bar and from the terrace.
