The Terme di Riolo thermal centre is the main but not the only attraction of this town set in the green landscape of the Apennines. It offers a myriad of nature excursions to enjoy on foot, mountain bike or horseback. Riolo itself is enchanting, with an old town centre that revolves around the twelfth century Rocca or upper town, perfectly conserved with its high walls that have defended its dwellers for hundreds of years.
Riolo is halfway between two important tourist towns; Imola and Faenza. Imola is famed in car racing circles as home to the Enzo and Dino Ferrari racetrack where the Gran Premio of the Republic of San Marion was held for many years. It is also home to many monuments and museums of cultural interest. Faenza instead is famous for tradition of ceramic art brought to the highest levels: you can visit the International Museum of Ceramics, where you can see collections of clay pieces made not only in Faenza but all over the world and from a variety of periods. The city also has architecture spanning from Roman times to the neoclassical period (a splendid example is the elegant Palazzo Milzetti), passing through medieval and renaissance period structures.
Among the other places of interest around Riolo Terme are Brisighella, a well-preserved medieval village, and Casola Valsenio. This hamlet founded by Benedictine monks grew from the year 1,000 onwards to become a point of reference for all those who are interested in medicinal herbs. Its important specialised botanical garden and its rich archive of texts on the subject are particularly precious. Other must see attractions are the Orridi of Rio Basino, naturally occurring caves that lie near the Vena del Gesso.
