San Montano Resort & SPA *****
Hotel San Montano dominates Mount Vico, which is above the town of Lacco Ameno. Thanks to this position, the hotel is able to offer its a guests the perfect panorama in any direction they look: the sea, greenery and the lush vegetation of the park that surrounds the hotel can be seen, and, when looking towards the horizon, you can see the Gulf of Naples, Vesuvius, Mount Epomeo and Ventotene. In the middle of this natural splendour is the ideal property created to satisfy any type of request for calmness, fun, beauty and relaxation. The hotel is furnished with elegance, great detail and maiolicas and in a style that recalls the sea. It is home to a top quality restaurant and services such as shuttle buses to get to the island’s most interesting spots, an entrance to the San Montano beach and, of course, facilities for health and well-being. There are also two outdoor swimming pools, one filled with thermal water and the other with sea water, and next to the latter pool is a natural sauna inside a cave and a thermal hydromassage tub.
This volcanic island was blessed by nature: Ischia has thermal springs, water and mud which all have healing and preventative properties which were recognised by the Greeks and Romans more than two thousand years ago. Hotel San Montano knows how to get the most out of the island’s resources by fusing together health and well-being offers with opportunities to relax and have fun. Of the two outdoor swimming pools, the thermal one is connected to the hotel via a tunnel, letting guests use and get to the pool even when the temperature and weather is not perfect, and, as well as the benefits the water itself provides, there is also a waterfall and Jacuzzi. Next to the sea water swimming pool, which is dedicated to swimming, is a natural sauna inside a cave and thermal hydromassage tub. However, the hotel’s well-being offer does not stop at just health and fun: beauty treatments and massages are also carried out here. What is more, the gym, sauna, steam bath, special showers and swimming pool for cardiovascular treatments, which can all be used for muscular rehabilitation exercises, are complemented by techniques dedicated to the body and mind, ayurveda, shiatsu and chakra stone massages and aesthetic treatments for the face and body.
Mahogany, brass, large rudders and an old marine style: the hotel’s rooms do not leave any room for doubt about the inspiration of the fittings, which are dedicated to the sea, the island’s nature and the thermal waters. The irresistible characteristic of the rooms is thanks to furnishings which recall the sea and some of them were even recovered from old boats.
The hotel offers a large choice of rooms, some with sea views and some with views of the garden, and various services and rooms ranging from single, standard, comfort, superior and sea view rooms and junior suites and suites.
One of Hotel San Montano’s most fascinating aspects is the splendid view of the sea, the island and the Gulf of Naples and its position is what allows for this, and the restaurant’s terrace further enhances this feature. The restaurant has ample rooms that run right up the western side of the hotel, thus guests have the possibility of consuming their meals, made from local products and based on the Mediterranean cuisine, whilst enjoying one of the most beautiful panoramas the island has to offer. However, this should not distract guests from their dishes, which are adorned with choices of local ingredients of the highest quality and which are characterised by loyalty to the Neapolitan cuisine. However, the desserts must not be forgotten because they are simply superb, as well as the well stocked wine cellar that has a selection of the best Campania and Southern Italian wines. The two bars accompany the more magical moments spent in San Montano: the poolside bar spoils guests who are sunbathing or relaxing in the water, whilst the terrace bar makes the spectacular view of the sunset on the island even more fascinating by serving cocktails and playing discrete background music.
Some of the hotel’s services and facilities:
Ischia is not just about spas, but also seaside, archaeological and more general cultural tourism. The archaeological repertoire is very rich (interesting finding are preserved and displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Villa Arbusto in Lacco Ameno, the same town where Hotel San Montano is situated) but the island’s main attraction is the Aragonese Castle, which lies in the centre of a fortified citadel on an island opposite the town of Ischia Porto, which it is connected to via a bridge. This castle was used for many years as a refuge for the population when they underwent frequent attacks from corsairs.
Ischia, the biggest of the Phlegrean Islands in the Gulf of Naples, along with Procida and Vivara, is linked to the capital city of the Campania region via an efficient ferry service, as well as to other places, particularly in the summer months, like Capri and Procida.
If you have enough time, a trip to the Amalfi Coast is a must. This coast line is approximately 50 kilometres long and runs from Vietri to Positano, passing through towns like Cetara, Ravello and Amalfi and it is, by and large, one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world. Not far from Naples is the Vesuvius National Park and here it is possible to climb up to the peak of the volcano and admire a landscape that includes the Gulf of Gaeta, the Sorrentine peninsula and Capri, as well as the immense crater. The archaeological sites Paestum and Pompei are also easy to reach from the capital city of Campania.
